Character Artist

Lumi

2025 - Maya

Lumi is an original character concepted and created by me. She is a snow fox girl with a cutesy personality, designed with nice warm winter clothes and a pastel colour palette.

About This Project

This project explored the entire 3D character development pipeline and additional steps of rendering. The task was to concept any character of our choice within reasonable capabilities, then convert that character to the 3D environment.

Summary Of Work

The work entailed the full 3D character creation pipeline along side lighting & rendering.
I did the concept art in Clip Studio Paint, modelling in Blender, texturing in substance painter, and did rigging to rendering in Maya. I found this workflow of Blender and Maya to be effective as it's tailored to the specialties of each program.

The project pipeline & work I did:
- Concept Art
- Blocking & Modelling
- UV Unwrapping
- Texturing
- Rigging & Blend Shapes
- Weight Painting & Posing
- Lighting & Rendering

Project Outcome & Discussion

The Lumi project was invaluable experience and my first time creating a fully fleshed out 3D character.
Starting at the concept art, I had to learn how to draw a character from scratch, and it was frustrating to have a concept pictured without the ability to bring it to reality, but I was able to draw Lumi to a degree I'm quite happy with and learned a lot of drawing skills through trial and error.

For modelling I used a low to high poly subdivision modifier workflow, this made creating Lumi very easy as I could make changes easily in a non destructive way, I followed the same method when creating her clothes. This was great experience for learning character anatomy.

For texturing I wanted to create a cozy pastel theme, I chose the current colour palette due to it's variance in colour while effectively not having any clashing colours. For her fur while there is no visual tuffs, she's portrayed animal like enough that her being a humanoid fox is apparent to the viewer, additionally to fit her arctic theming I detailed her fur to look like snow with sparkling effects.

Rigging and blend shapes were relatively easy but they each take a lot of time to do due to the specific details they require, to ensure nothing is clipping or off putting. I created 15+ blend shapes focusing on primary visemes and then additional facial expressions.

Weight painting was the hardest part of the project due to technical issues with Maya, but I was able to overcome them to an acceptable degree. For posing I wanted Lumi to have the cutest pose possible, and nothing is cuter than making a heart sign.

The lighting and rendering is very standard as it wasn't a highlight of this project, but I did learn new rendering techniques, which allowed me to create high quality renders up to 2k in image quality.

Overall the project allowed me to take a deeper look into the intricacies of each stage of the pipeline, and expand my skillset.
